Clay,
such a basic material, is incredibly versatile and lends itself to all manner
of expression. I create primarily functional pottery that invites touch,
transforming a cup of tea with a shape that encourages cradling in the hand or
texture to be explored with the fingers. The pot’s use should inspire delight
or curiosity. With this in mind, I often alter wheel-thrown forms or create
asymmetrical patterns in decoration or firing. The user is encouraged to
experience the whole piece, because viewing one side does not convey the whole
story. Clay also plays well with others when incorporated into mixed-media
pieces, such as decorative platters, vases, and bowls with woven or felted
rims. It is my delight to know that others enjoy these pots as much as I do.
