Martha Brownscombe—Studio Artist
My work is both
on and off the loom. I make one-of-a-kind wall pieces, wearable art and
fiber sculptures. I am always looking at materials, and thinking how it
could be made into a woven structure. For many years now, I have been
experimenting with incorporating natural materials in my fiber pieces. I
find using traditional weaving techniques while incorporating unusual materials
endlessly fascinating. I enjoy being in nature and collecting materials
that most would not notice. It can take me years to collect enough
natural material to make a piece. As I collect, I wonder to myself how
long has this stick or the stone on the beach been in the water, where did it
come from, what is its history. Often the incubation period for the
material to manifest into a piece can be 3-5 years, if not longer. I do not
mind this process. It truly is the
process that I enjoy most in my fiber work.
I am also intrigued with weaving with and
creating fiber pieces with new cutting edge fibers and yarns. I have been
weaving with steel, wires of all kinds, bamboo yarns, soy, and anything that
looks like I can weave to make a woven structure.
