Michael Maurer Smith
My
paintings are meditations—a search for beauty and solace. Although they
are non-representational they reveal my affinity for the landscape and
may be seen as a kind of topography. As the renown painter, Howard
Hodgkin, has said of his nonrepresentational paintings, “They are
representational pictures of emotional situations.” So are mine.
As
a photographer the camera is my window, excuse, shield, door, weapon
and notebook. It affords me access and distance. Quoting Man Ray, “I
photograph what I do not wish to paint and I paint what I cannot
photograph.”
